Asthma Action Plans

Asthma Action Plans are color-coded and use the colors of a stoplight to help you decide what treatment is recommended for your child. An example of these plans can be found here. These plans should only be completed by your doctor and strictly followed to gain control of your asthma. Asthma Action Plans can be completed for preschool and school age children by their prescribing doctor.

Green Zone is
80%-100% of best

No Symptoms
Controlled. Your child's asthma is in control. You should not see any of the early or late warning signs of an asthma episode. If your child receives medicines daily to control asthma, continue to give these medicines unless the doctor gives you other instructions.
CAUTION
Yellow Zone is
50%-80% of best

Moderate Symptoms

Caution. Your child has one or more of the warning signs of an asthma episode. Take action at once to gain control of your child's asthms. Your child's doctor should provide an action plan to follow when these early warning signs appear. If your child has yellow zone symptoms often or stays in the yellow zone for 48 hours, cntact the doctor.

Severe Symptoms

Emergency. Your child has one or more of the late warning signs of an asthma episode. When symptoms are in the red zone, your child's asthma is very serious. The doctor should give you a plan to follow when your child is in the red zone. Always call a doctor when your child is in the red zone.
