HCOTA Activities, Announcement & Programs

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend 150 minutes of moderate - intensity physical activity every week and muscle strengthening activities on two or more days a week. We know 150 minutes each week sounds like a lot of time, but you don't have to do it all at once. Not only is it best to spread your activity out during the week, but you can break it up into smaller chunks of time during the day. As long as you're doing your activity at a moderate or vigorous effort for at least 10 minutes at a time.

Give it a try

Try going for a 10-minute brisk walk, 3 times a day, 5 days a week. This will give you a total of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity.

Healthy Living

The goal of the Healthy Living program is to educate the community about the connection between nutrition, physical activity, and chronic disease using a self-management and social support framework. The program engages participants to expand healthy food preparation skills, increase fruit and vegetable consumption, increase daily physical activity levels, manage stress, as well as understanding their individual cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood glucose numbers. Six week sessions are scheduled throughout the year. Check back for upcoming dates.


Passport 2 Fitness

Passport 2 Fitness is an exciting program for children in grades 3 - 8 in Pasquotank, Perquimans, Camden, and Currituck counties. The purpose of this program is to encourage physical activity. The goal for participants is to run/walk in as many one mile or 5K races in this area. All participants will receive a Healthy Carolinians Runners t-shirt at each race and a Passport 2 Fitness booklet.

Race times are recorded and kept by Healthy Carolinians of the Albemarle and at the end of the school year, anyone participating in 3 or more races will receive a prize. Additionally, larger prizes will be given to the girl and boy with the most improved time in each county.
